Food Innovation Center

The Food Innovation Center located on Nebraska Innovation Campus consists of research laboratories, classroom and teaching labs, a pilot plant space, office, faculty and student space as well as shell space.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln will lease the majority of the 170,00 SF building for the Department of Food Science and Technology and Food Processing Center while ConAgra Foods will occupy the pilot plant. The building provides more space to do research in food processing, safety, allergens and nutrition while also designating classrooms for chemistry, microbiology and food product development.

The four story building is a new cast-in-place concrete structure attached to a new steel frame structure inside existing historical walls which are being restored. Restoration of the approximately 700 lineal feet of existing walls included completely tuckpointing the brick, replacement of existing structural cast-in-place concrete lintels over 1/3 of the openings, replacement of damaged brick, and casting a concrete ‘beam’ on top of the entire wall to help stabilize the system. The walls were also tied to the new steel structure to add stability. A new concrete footing was poured along the entire inside perimeter of the wall and was pinned to the wall foundation to add stability. Services to the building include natural gas, purified water, tempered water and lab air with most spaces equipped with acid waste drainage piping.
