Syracuse Dunbar Avoca Middle School

The citizens of Syracuse, Dunbar, and Avoca schools passed a $7.4 million bond request, which included major architectural upgrades and an 85,800 SF addition that included a new gymnasium. The gym filled a void for student athletics and physical education.
The Syracuse Dunbar Avoca Middle School Addition was an 85,800 SF addition that included the new construction of: a gymnasium (wood floor, bleachers, scoreboards, six retractable basketball goals and volleyball sleeves); commercial kitchen; locker rooms; weight room; media center; administrative offices; science rooms; music rooms; art room; and 16 classrooms. The Syracuse school structure was made of precast tilt up panels for the gymnasium, precast hollow core plank with concrete topping, masonry walls and steel columns, beams, and roof joist. The exterior was made of brick veneer and precast stone accents. Interior finishes included: carpet, quarry, porcelain, and ceramic tile on the floors and walls. Other wall treatments included a multi-colored wall system and tack board panels. The site work included a new bus loop and parking area, as well as, asphalt resurfacing of the existing parking lot. The project began in January of 2009 and was finished in time for the 2010-2011 school year.
