Early Learning Center at Skinner

Early Learning Center at Skinner is a research-based program supported by the Buffett Early Childhood Fund which prepares at-risk infants and toddlers for pre-K and kindergarten. The Center brings year-round high-quality early childhood programming to the North Omaha area.

The Early Learning Center at Skinner is a 26,000 SF facility with a fully equipped commercial kitchen, storm shelter, twelve classrooms for 0-3 year olds, four flexible classrooms, and areas for administration, interior play, multipurpose play, observation, consultation and teacher lounge/resource. Unique design features include 10’ deep soffits around the building which provide shade and allow a dry play space during rain, clerestory corridors provide additional natural lighting, aluminum windows extend to 8” above the floor to allow children to see out of rooms, and the mechanical system consists of a cooling tower and multiple heat pumps to allow for climate control of each classroom.

Additional building features include mirrored glass in classrooms for observation, added bathroom ductwork for diaper venting and fenced exterior playground areas with equipment designed for specific age groups. The building exterior incorporated a variety of materials such as metal panels, cement board panels, burnished block and cambia tongue and groove decking. The project was designed and bid in several bid packages to allow early demolition, civil, structural and MEP work to progress ahead of the finishes in the final design package.
