Early Learning Center at Gateway

Early Learning Center at Gateway is a research-based program supported by the Buffett Early Childhood Fund which prepares at-risk children for school. The Center brings high-quality early childhood programming to the Omaha Central area.

The Gateway Early Childhood Center has storm shelter, mechanical room, kitchen, 16 classrooms, and areas for administration, teacher/resource, play, multipurpose (gymnasium/auditorium) and consultations. Some of the unique features include two clerestory areas, aluminum glazed storefront and curtainwall systems to utilize natural lighting, terrace with independent drainage flooring system, segmental retaining walls, architectural masonry with varying depth and color changes, flexible playground areas with multiple play and landscaping features, and a mechanical system with cooling tower and multiple heat pumps to allow for climate control of each individual classroom.

The project required demolition of an existing 23,000 SF facility that was sitting in the future parking lot area. Existing 24” storm lines had to be moved on the north end of the property to allow the building footprint to sit correctly on the site. The project was designed and bid in several bid packages to allow early demolition, civil, structural and MEP work to progress ahead of the finishes in the final design package. The design and construction team were able to keep the existing school to the north, Gateway Elementary, running smoothly without interruption during the academic year.
